I haven’t been blogging much lately, but I think it’s because I have grown tired of this blog. It doesn’t seem to fit my life anymore. At first I thought, I was just tired of this whole blog / Twitter thing, and thought about just deleting the blog and my Twitter account. Luckily for me, the great BlackBerry Breakdown of 2011 happened, and after 3 days of having no connectivity, I realised that is not the answer.

So I have been thinking of starting a new blog, and this time I think I will not do it anonymously. I’m still thinking it through, trying to figure out what I want to call it and how I want to do it, but after almost 2 years being Twistygirl, and at least 1 of those 2 years being the worse in my whole entire life, I have had enough of being all dark and twisty inside. It’s time to spray some glitter and hang some flashy lights all over the dark and twisty and at least try and make it seem sparkly and bright.

I’ve been very quiet lately, sort of taking a break from everything and desperately wishing for my own island. I just cannot believe how quickly the time is going by, it’s October already!! And even worse my exams start in 14 days.

For the last month, it has just been me and my BFF in the office while the other 2 girls are away on maternity leave. So even though we are very busy now, work has become a lot more fun and bearable. We have no office politics or scenes with the other 2 gone, and because we are very similar, we can just get on with our work and have a few laughs in between. We also made a playlist with our favourite songs so all day long we have a mix of metal, rock, alternative and pop music to keep us going. I think if head office heard some of these songs we might even end up getting warnings, but it makes working for this company so much more bearable.

My poor puppy has been coughing almost non-stop and the antibiotics doesn’t seem to be working anymore. I’m so worried about her, and really don’t know what to do seeing that the vets just keep wanting to put her on antibiotics. And she’s turning 11 on Oct 16th, so she’s not that young anymore which makes me worry even more!

And the best news ever: I have finally found a place to stay!! Its a pretty little place with lots of potential and its really affordable. I should sign the contract on Monday or Tuesday (I’m just having someone look over it for me) and then I can move at the end of October!! I’m really happy, but it means moving out of the east of Pretoria to the dodgier side, but at the moment I don’t even car about that. In any case, I have a GPS so I’m sure I’ll be able to find the nearest mall and Woolworths food store

Things are starting to look good for me, so now I should just really focus on studying for the exams and my life should start getting back on track in just a few short months.

My Gautrain Experience

Last weekend, the sister and I finally went on the Gautrain, to spend the weekend in Joburg. Seeing that a high-speed commuter train is a new thing in SA, we decided to use it for the weekend, even though it would’ve been much cheaper to just go by car.

The train ride itself was just like you would expect in any European country and was quite enjoyable. I do, however, wonder how long the security will be actively involved in checking up on the commuters and preventing them from taking off their shoes, wearing hoodies and chewing gum.

I would also like to ask all fellow South Africans why, you cannot understand the concept of the yellow line? Seriously, I get that all of us aren’t as fortunate to have traveled overseas and do not understand that the line is there for our own safety, but do you really have to fight with the security when they tell you to step back? (So Gautrain, how about putting some visible signs up so people know what the line is for?) I saw 4 different people at Sandton Station, in the space of 20 minutes get very vocal and defensive when asked to step behind the yellow line.

My problem came in with the parking. Seeing that the buses do not run over the weekend (somebody please explain this to me as there are trains running but no supplementary transport to get to and from the stations?!) we had to park at Hatfield Station for the weekend. We worked out that it will cost us R60.00 for the weekend, as I stupidly assumed that parking will be calculated on a 24-hour basis. We parked Friday afternoon at 16:00 and left on Sunday at 12:00 and we had to pay R110.00 for less than 48 hours parking, when there was absolutely no other alternative public transport we could use to get back home on Sunday.

But it got even worse, when we got to the booms and the little ticket box told us that we short-payed and that we owe R160 for the parking (the 4-day rate). This turned into a whole shouting match between me and the security at the boom because, she insisted I go back and pay for the 4th day, which is completely wrong. It took her 5 minutes to finally open the boom for us and let us out.

It blows my mind that we paid about 3 times more for using public transport over the weekend, than it would’ve cots me to use public transport in SA. I’m not sure if daily commuters find it cheaper, but I for sure will not be using the Gautrain for weekend excursions again, it is just not financially feasible.

After my post on Harry Potter, in which I mentioned that it isn’t my favourite series and that I didn’t really like Harry Potter himself either, I got this comment from Anonymous:

Boy, am I glad I never said I loved Harry Potter. I shudder to think what Harry Potter or JK Rowling ever did to Anonymous to provoke this comment. First of all, he/she took the time to read something about Harry Potter when they very clearly hate the entire subject and then they go and comment as well. Dear Anonymous, I suggest you go outside and take a deep breath of fresh air and chill out. This reaction was extreme, but it was good for a laugh though, so thanks, I guess.

Movies vs Books

The general rule for the movies vs books question is that the book is always better. I have never seen a movie where I thought it was better than the book and in general if a book was really good and they make a movie based on it, I just won’t go watch the movie.

A great example of this butchery of a phenomenal book is the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, (one of my top favourite books). I have not, and will never watch the movie simply based on the horrible reviews it got from friends who have read the book and then watched the movie.

I must also say that there are a few movies that get it very right, but I still won’t pick the movie over the book. Two of my favourite books have made it into very good movies; Chocolat and The Green Mile. Both these movies are so close to the books that it doesn’t leave me feeling disappointed and wanting to re-read the books.

Then there is the single anomaly; The Count of Monte Cristo. I was first introduced to Edmond Dantes by watching the 400 minute long, french mini-series (with English subtitles). I loved it so much that I went out and bought the book. Since then, I must have read the book 4 times and it had shot right up to one of my top 5 books ever. As for the french mini-series, I also bought a copy of the DVD’s, it truly is an amazing adaptation of the book.

With the increasing popularity of splitting movies into segments, I don’t see why the movies cannot be made closer to the books without cutting out half the scenes. I am sure many book fans will much rather go see 2 2hour movies that bring forth the same emotion and pleasure that the book did, rather than being disappointed after watching one movie that hardly resembles the great story we fell in love with on paper.

Harry Potter, done and dusted

Last night I finally made it to the movies to go and watch the last installment of the Harry Potter series, this after watching the Deathly Hallows Part 1 earlier in the afternoon. I am definitely not a Harry Potter fan, and the only reason I read the books in the first place is because it is on my 101 Books List. And after that, I decided to give the movies a go, just to see what all the hype is about. Now that I’ve read all the books and seen all the movies, I can close the Harry Potter chapter forever.

Although I enjoyed the 1st and 2nd movies and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, the other movies weren’t that great and I found it difficult to sit through a whole movie. I also do not like Harry Potter himself. If I found out I was this all-important wizard who is destined to fight the most powerful wizard out there, I would pay more attention in class and learn my spells in stead of getting by on the knowledge of 1 friend and luck. I found him irritating and petulant; not the best qualities for the hero of a story, in my opinion.

At least I gave Harry Potter a chance, but I honestly don’t see how this franchise c0uld be this huge and have as many fans as it does. It boggles my mind.

I’ve finally gone over the edge

After a horrible 2 weeks, where my BFF (the manager) has been on leave and I have been alone in the office with the 2 pregnant colleagues I think I have finally lost the plot completely. Besides being inundated with pregnant talk, I had to put up with both of them being absolutely, in-comprehensively dumb (apparently this is a normal side-affect of being pregnant). The one colleague doesn’t stop talking about her work (when she does any). She keeps giving us a step by step update on what she is doing, the whole fucking day!!!. I swear, the last 2 weeks has been the longest weeks in the history of the world!

It might also explain why, this morning, I couldn’t stop giggling at this very old and crazy demotivational poster. My only conclusion is that I have finally gone over the edge and am now certifiably insane. Seriously, I’m still laughing at this demon seal!

WTF for the day

My sister dubbed me The Princess of Darkness, because I hate everything and everyone. I was quite fine with it because let’s face it, most days I do hate everything and everyone. Plus who wouldn’t want to be a princess? Even if it has to be over darkness, a princess is a princess.

I have just read Cannibal Killers by Paul Haining, which is a book about various cannibal killers over the years. After reading the bit about “Satan’s Disciples” the title of Princess of Darkness, somehow doesn’t sit as well as it used to. Basically Manuela and her husband Daniel murdered a man and drank his blood because they thought they were vampires and wanted to make an offering to Satan so they can ensure they go to hell.

Where the really weird part comes in, though is the fact that Manuela met David through an ad that David’s placed in some Gothic, heavy metal magazine. His ad read “Pitch-black Vampire seeks princess of darkness who hates everything and everyone and has bidden farewell to life”.

How weird and creepy is that?
